PROTECT YOUR PETS FROM HOLIDAY DANGERS

'Tis the season to be jolly and both you and your pet will have a happy holiday season if you make sure your kitties and pooches are protected from these potential holiday dangers:

  • Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are not toxic, but eating the leaves can upset a dog's tummy.
  • Chocolate can be deadly. It contains theobromine, which may cause diarrhea, seizures and death.
  • Macadamia nuts are a popular holiday snack, but they can cause vomiting and balance problems in animals.
  • Turkey meat may be okay in moderation, but watch those little bones that can splinter and choke your pet.
  • Eggnog is also a no-no. The raw egg contains an enzyme that can cause a skin inflammation. And the alcohol, of course, is harmful especially higher-proof hooch.
  • If you have a live Christmas tree, make sure your pet doesn't drink the water in its stand. The tree food or preservative in the water can cause nausea.
  • Decorations can be trouble. Don't use icicles on your tree if you have pets. Cats or dogs can accidentally swallow them and choke. Glass ornaments can also cause harm if they shatter when Fido gives them a good tug.
  • Beware of electrical cords. Puppies and kitties can be electrocuted if they chew on them.
  • Onions are more harmful to cats than dogs, but eating a large amount can cause red cell damage even to canines.
  • Raisins and grapes can cause vomiting and kidney failure in dogs. No one knows why, but according to the ASPCA's poison control center, of the 140 cases of grape cases reported, over 50 dogs developed serious problems and seven died.
